Today is Ash Wednesday and I kick it off with one of my favourite hymns, which is also a hymn associated with Lent and Good Friday. For us Catholics, Ash Wednesday not only signifies the beginning of the Lenten period but a time for sober reflection, penance and repentance to God. I urge all Christians who can fast to treat this period of Lent differently. Let us fast and pray not only for personal development but also better leaders and followers, development in our countries and for peace in the world. Reflect on the lyrics of this beautiful hymn and enjoy your Lent. God of mercy and compassion,Look with pity upon me,Father, let me call Thee Father,‘Tis Thy child returns to Thee.Refrain:Jesus, Lord, I ask for mercy;Let me not implore in vain;All my sins, I now detest them,Never will I sin again. 2. By my sins I have deservedDeath and endless misery,Hell with all its pains and torments,And for all eternity.(Refrain)3. By my sins I have abandonedRight and claim to heav’n above.Where the saints rejoice foreverIn a boundless sea of love.(Refrain)4. See our Savior, bleeding, dying,On the cross of Calvary;To that cross my sins have nail’d Him,Yet He bleeds and dies for me.(Refrain)

God of mercy and compassion,
Look with pity upon me,
Father, let me call Thee Father,

Jesus, Lord, I ask for mercy;

All my sins, I now detest them,
Never will I sin again.

Death and endless misery,
Hell with all its pains and torments,

3. By my sins I have abandoned
Right and claim to heav’n above.
Where the saints rejoice forever
In a boundless sea of love.

4. See our Savior, bleeding, dying,
On the cross of Calvary;
To that cross my sins have nail’d Him,
Yet He bleeds and dies for me.

It has been a long wait; a long wait for another World Cup; a long wait for the World Cup to come to Africa. I can’t say how excited I am.  I salute the Republic of South Africa. They have done us proud already. Like I told a colleague yesterday, no country could have done it better than South Africa. They have beaten all odds and seeing the World Cup draw and last nights concert, I have no doubts this is going to be a very successful tournament. I am rooting for Ghana. I have a lot of confidence in the Black Stars and I believe strongly that they will win the World Cup. Today, when the tournament kicks off at 16:00CAT, I will be rooting for South Africa against Mexico. I don’t expect them to go past the quarter-finals but they have really improved and with the vuvuzelas and the cheers, they should do well. Ahhh! I can’t say how excited I am. I have been banging K’naan’s Wavin’ Flag all morning. I, Kwabena, promise to watch all 64 matches. Let’s Go!!! “Give you freedom, give you fire, give you reason, take you higher. See the champions, take the field now, you define us, make us feel proud. In the streets are, exaliftin’, as we lose our inhabition. Celebration it’s around us, every nations, all around us. Singin’ forever young, singin’ songs underneath that sun. Let’s rejoice in the beautiful game. And together at the end of the day, We All Say: When I get older, I will be stronger. They’ll call me freedom. Just like a wavin’ flag”. -Wavin’ Flag

Today, Ghana Celebrates 53 Years Of Independence, 53 Years Of Nationhood. A Throwback From The Days. Enjoy!!!

Ghana Freedom – E.T. Mensah & The Tempos Band

Kwame Nkrumah’s Midnight Speech (The Declaration Of Independence) “At long last, the battle has ended! And thus Ghana, your beloved country is free forever.” And yet again I want to take the opportunity to thank the chiefs and people of this country, the youth, the farmers, the women who have so nobly fought and won this battle. Also I want to thank the valiant ex-service men who have so co-operated with me in this mighty task of freeing our country from foreign rule and imperialism. And as I pointed out at our party conference in Saltpond… I made it quite clear that from now on – today – we must change our attitudes, our minds, we must realise that from now on, we are no more a colonial but a free and independent people. But also, as I pointed out, that also entails hard work. I am depending upon the millions of the country, and the chiefs and people, to help me to reshape the destiny of this country. We are prepared to pick it up and make it a nation that will be respected by every other nation in the world. We know we are going to have difficult beginnings, but again, I’m relying upon your support, I’m relying upon your hard work. Seeing you in this thousands… it doesn’t matter how far my eye goes, I can see that you are here in your millions and my last warning to you is that you are to stand firm behind us so that we can prove to the world that when the African is given a chance he can show the world that he is somebody! We have awakened. We shall no more go back sleep anymore. Today, from now on, there is a new African in the world! That new African is ready to fight his own battles and show that after all, the black man is capable of managing his own affairs. We are going to demonstrate to the world, to the other nations, young as we are that we are prepared to lay our own foundation. As I said in the assembly just minutes ago, I made a point that we are going to create our own African personality and identity. It’s the only way that we can show the world that we are ready for own own battles. But today, may I call upon you all – that on this great day, let us all remember that nothing in the world can be done unless it’s had the purport and support of God. We have won the battle and we again re-dedicate ourselves not only in the struggle to emancipate other territories in Africa … Our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent. Let us now fellow Ghanaians, let us now ask for God’s blessing and for only two seconds in your thousands and millions, I want to ask you to pause only for one minute and give thanks to almighty God for having led us through obstacles, imprisonments, hardships and suffering to have brought us to the end of our trouble today. One minute silence. Ghana is free forever. And here, I will ask the band to play the Ghana national anthem. [The Union Jack Is Lowered, The Black Star Is Hoisted….Band plays National anthem] Freedom, Freedom, Freedom! God bless you!”
